Meet Horace G. Oscar Farmer,
Founding Principal of H.G. Oscar Farmer and Associates. |
Starting back in 1984 through to Cap Juluca's opening in 1988, Oscar was the original architect who created for Cap Juluca its timeless, iconic and sophisticated Mediterranean architectural design.
Now, guess which architect was selected by current Cap Juluca owner Adam Aron to lead the effort to add new touches to Cap Juluca during its dramatic renovation and expansion some 25 years later. That's right: Oscar Farmer.
Persuaded to come out of what he calls "partial-retirement," a vibrant Oscar Farmer was drafted last spring at the tender age of 79 to put new architectural touches on Cap Juluca as it enters a new era under only its third set of owners since its inception. Conjuring up the famous quote of General Douglas MacArthur, Oscar Farmer said, "Architects are like old soldiers...they never die." Of course unlike the MacArthur quote, they also do not "just fade away." Even now, Oscar lectures weekly as he teaches a class on Drawing, Painting and Architecture at a university near his Los Angeles home, while he produces idea after idea after idea as to how to best improve Cap Juluca.

Oscar and Bill Farmer on Maundays Bay Beach |
Born in Birmingham, England, in December, 1928, Oscar (along with his talented architect son William Farmer, who also is centrally involved in the Cap Juluca effort) moved to Los Angeles in 1965. Thanks to the Cap Juluca assignment, father and son are now working together again in an architectural design planning practice that has played a key role in any number of stunning local architectural endeavors.
In their careers, Oscar and Bill Farmer have been integrally involved in the design of the renovation of the Los Angeles Coliseum; several pavilions and venues for the Games of the XXIII Olympiad Los Angeles 1984; the headquarters of one of the State of California's most important environmental agencies; a luxury hotel in Santa Monica; the Bing Crosby estate in Palm Desert and numerous private residences in L.A.'s most exclusive neighborhoods. Their hotel work has been featured in just about every travel publication there is, and their residential work has been featured in Architectural Digest, the coveted press mention residential architects seek most.
Oscar describes Cap Juluca as the most romantic of his many architectural creations, and says it was the result of his "complete interest in geometry, simplicity and a sense of place." Inspired by the classic architecture of ancient Rome and Greece, coupled with an interior design from Morocco, Cap Juluca was born with its unique low profile private villas, which are highlighted by their courtyards, secluded terraces, domes, arches, perforations and cutouts. Oscar continued, "I did not want to build an ordinary hotel. I was hoping to create a series of separate mansions. With their assembly of shapes, components and geometric forms, I hoped to wind up with a place of unusual simplicity, privacy and barefoot elegance."
Oscar is excited about the chance to revisit his Cap Juluca work, "It was a great day when Adam Aron called me. I am honored - no, make that thrilled - to be asked to put new touches on one of the happiest creations of my career, and yet at the same time retain the architectural influences that make Cap Juluca a special place."
And despite all the praise that has been given over the years to Cap Juluca for its iconic architecture, Oscar Farmer heaps his praise elsewhere. "I had so much fun as we worked to create Cap Juluca back in the '80s because it was such a pleasure and I had so much enjoyment in going over and over again to Anguilla. It's the people of the island who make Cap Juluca great. I just cannot say enough about the Anguillians, and how friendly and welcoming they are."
To experience for yourself the legendary friendliness of Anguilla, not to mention Oscar Farmer's architecture both new and old, visit www.capjuluca.com and call your travel professional or the reservations staff at the hotel directly at 1-264-497-6666.
